Huan Zhu Ge Ge II Episodes 47 & 48 [SERIES END]

Phew. What a journey, everyone. Here are the last 2 episodes together, one last push.

Beating some dead horses, and revisiting some beloved tropes, lots of sentimental scenes, you know the drill. No climax, just a little happy fizzle. And in my world, this is the end and they lived happily ever after.

There is one scene of literary riddles in episode 48, where I changed the riddle because it was based on Chinese characters, and that is pointless to even try to explain literally every line. In the original Chinese riddle, the written character contained (or didn’t) the character 口 (kou, mouth) hidden in the phrase somewhere.

It happened to work out that I only had to change a few of the examples, or flip flop the two words. I only had to slightly alter 1 or 2 myself but it’s not like I rewrote the whole scene. And it only works in traditional Chinese, which makes sense with the time.

A few examples, can you find the 口 in the words?:

• 高 vs 矮 (tall vs short)

• 小燕子 vs 紫薇 (Xiao Yan Zi vs Zi Wei)

• 站 vs 坐 (standing vs sitting)

• 跳 vs 走 (jumping vs walking; aka leaping vs strutting)

• 吃 vs 睡 （eating vs sleeping);

Other than that, like I mentioned, very slow episodes. Pretty wholesome fuzzy ending.

Getting my thanks out of the way right before the last two episodes drop in the next day or so.

Thanks to everyone who joined me along on what was for me the most extensive rewatch of my favorite series from childhood. It was a lot of fun!! And it gave my quarantine a bit of structure and continuity.

For the first time, I had no choice but to understand almost everything in the series. Sometimes, it took a while to research to extrapolate a meaning. But now I have an appreciation for everything I glazed over countless times as a child – but I still think the show is perfectly enjoyable without the little extra poetic flavor.

I did my best with all the literature and poetry, but it’s not my strong suit. Hopefully I got the meaning across. I know there are mistakes in the subtitles, which is unfortunate, but I hope it’s still enjoyable to watch.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge II Episode 46 English sub

This is the last episode of substance! Welcome to the end.

The last two put a nice bowtie on the whole series, but here is where everything truly comes full circle.

There’s a poem Zi Wei recited, where she cleverly said “don’t hit” many different ways. But the expressions only work in Chinese, unfortunately, where all of these instances use the same verb as “hit.” It’s like saying “kids stay up until midnight partying” is they “don’t hit” the hay. Sometimes I use “strike,” as in “don’t strike” the iron. But I couldn’t come up with something similar for all of it. Wordplay is hard. I’m sorry I couldn’t fully convey the brilliance of this poem.

No spoilers, but since the beginning of the series felt like eons ago, they are referring to episodes 12-14 and 25-26 if you want to look back, and also episode 8 & 38.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge II Episode 45 Eng sub

A touching, happy, and wholesome episode. We are at the beginning of the end, folks. Enjoy it while it lasts :’)

I couldn’t find much about the gold medals of merit, but they appear to be a real thing based in history, and much smaller/regular medal sized. If there’s one thing about this show, it’s that props are a little exaggerated. Those headdresses, a little too big for their time. Definitely better costumes in the remakes, not that I could stomach watching it for much longer than to notice the improved visuals.

As far as the dowry, it’s not quite for the man’s family as the proof of the daughter’s worth, but like a gift/inheritance for the woman to take into the next chapter of her life as she marries out of her family into her husband’s, even though the amount is definitely a reflection of her worth. I don’t know if at this point in China’s history, the groom’s family is paying a price for the bride to the bride’s parents.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge II Episode 44 Eng sub

Er Kang and Xiao Jian stroking each other’s …egos in this episode a lot. Literary inquisition, which seems pretty obvious. Sorry Er Kang, but the day you dream of is still not here today.

The beginning of

an insufferable

bromance.

It drove me crazy how much they sat around not eating in this episode. Maybe I was just hungry every time I worked on this episode. But a huge spread of food, and everyone’s sitting around talking/crying? Big aiya mood.

The dishes are mostly all commonly used 4-word phrases, some of which they often use in the show! But not all are idioms. XYZ’s catchphrase, “only a head and a life to lose” is 2 4-word phrases, the head being the fish, and the body/life being the chicken in the soup. Not an idiom though. A little forced for a comedy section, but welcome nonetheless. The show is beginning to wrap itself up and coming full circle with the references.

Also who the f casually carves a watermelon for a 10+ course dinner you make all by yourself?? And is it me or does a vinegary spicy braised pork belly sound absolutely delicious? Some acidity to cut the fat, like a nice pork adobo. XYZ is a chef prodigy.

HZGG II Episode 3 AUDIO FIX

The show’s done, just waiting for proofreading before encoding and release. The proofreading part is pretty key, so there is a cap on how many lines we can read per day without glazing over every mistake.

In the mean time, I am re-releasing episode 3. I was also completely mortified to find out my spell check run didn’t save the first time around? It looks like I didn’t run spell check at all and is littered with mistakes! I depend on it to catch all the same typing mistakes I make over and over again when I try to keep up with the video while translating.

So this is re-spell checked, and the audio sync is fixed.

Phew okay, strap in for an exciting episode. The climax, maybe? I don’t know if there is a real climax in this show except for this episode. A lot happens here!

Persimmon redux, some petty tension between male leads, childish fighting and pouting, good stuff.

Yong Qi’s porcupine syndrome is brought up again. He lashes out at everyone when he’s angry (at Xiao Yan Zi), even those who are trying to help him. It originated from the first series, when they fought over Cai Lian (who they seem to mention a ton in part 2), and Er Tai and Er Kang both tried to counsel Yong Qi, only for him to snap back at them rudely.

I’m sorry it’s giving people trouble w/ access! It actually almost always works for me, although sometimes it’s a little slow. I use chrome with ublock origin (not to be confused with regular ublock), and it allows me to navigate the site without seeing ads or the “please turn off adblock” notification.
I’m not sure what kind of error messages you’re getting… maybe it also just doesn’t work in certain countries? Or the file name trips up certain browsers? Anyway, I’m open to uploading the rest onto a different site but so far no one has provided a good alternative. In the mean time there is always the google drive mirror courtesy of huanzhuyulu. My internet got severely downgraded after my move, so I’m afraid I can’t reupload the whole thing onto a different DDL host at this time.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge II Episode 40 Eng Sub

A lot of quick talking and subtitles that flash by a little more quickly for my taste in this episode in certain segments, so please get your reading eyes on.

Not many references to mention. There are several instances of the younger kids (Xiao Ge Zi, Twelfth Prince) using the “jie jie” (older sister) and “ge ge” (older brother) suffixes. It’s not the first time this has happened in the show but there happens to be a lot in this episode. I do included it sometimes, just to convey a sense of closeness between the characters, but if it’s just a way to refer to them out of respect, I leave it out most times.

Pretty straightforward episode.
